History & Philosophy
The Feadship name — an acronym for First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders — was established in 1949 to market Dutch yacht construction internationally. The consortium combines two family-owned yards: Royal Van Lent, operating from facilities on the Kagerplassen lake near Leiden, and De Vries Scheepsbouw with yards in Aalsmeer and Makkum. Both yards trace their origins to the 19th century, with generations of shipbuilding expertise informing their approach to modern yacht construction.
Feadship's construction philosophy emphasizes client collaboration, engineering innovation, and an uncompromising standard of finish quality. Each vessel is a bespoke creation — Feadship does not offer production models or platform designs. The in-house naval architecture firm, De Voogt, works directly with clients and their interior designers from initial concept through delivery, ensuring that engineering solutions support rather than constrain the design vision.

Innovation Leadership
Feadship has consistently led the industry in environmental innovation. The Savannah, delivered in 2015, was the first superyacht with a fully integrated hybrid propulsion system — diesel-electric drive with lithium-ion battery banks enabling silent, zero-emission operation at low speeds. This technology has since become an industry standard, but Feadship's early adoption demonstrated both technical courage and market foresight.
Current Feadship initiatives include hydrogen fuel cell auxiliary power, waste heat recovery systems, and advanced hull coatings that reduce fuel consumption. The yard's research into methanol and ammonia as future marine fuels positions Feadship at the forefront of the industry's decarbonization trajectory.
